BIG FAN – Movie Review

bigfan_filmstill3Okay, let me just begin by saying; there are some serious football fans out there!

Seriously, HOW far would you go to protect your “football” hero? I can almost guaranty there are a few out there, but anyways…hold on to your seats and get ready because it’s headed your way!

In BIG FAN; Actor Patton Oswalt plays an interesting character “Paul Aufiero” who struggles as a parking garage attendant from Staten Island. He’s self-described as the “world’s biggest New York Giants fan”. At 35-years-old; he still lives with his mother (Marcia Jean Kurtz) and spends his off time calling in to a local sports-radio station (760 The Zone), where he rants, in support of his team- The Giants, against another mysterious on-air rival; the relentless Eagles fan, Philadelphia Phil played by (Michael Papaport).

Now, if you can’t believe it can be any more complicated; he lives with the fiasco of the family forever harping on him for not doing anything with his life. And his mother, well, she’s constantly beating him down about how “the others” have great homes and awesome careers and wonderful families, while he’s nothing more than what he’s become…nothing! It’s so sad really, but I know this happens a lot in all reality.

BIG FAN stillTo make things worse, Paul’s world comes crashing down around him (like it wasn’t already with all the chaos in the home and with his life). Get this; he has a huge love for the giants and especially for the star linebacker Quantrell Bishop (Jonathan Hamm). Well, Paul and his best friend Sal (Kevin Corrigan) spot Bishop at a gas station in their neighborhood. As impulse would have it; they follow Bishops limo into Manhattan to a strip club, where they hang out in the background…watching their hero. They decide to approach him after agonizing on how they should and let’s just say – it didn’t turn out quite the way they’d expect.

This is where I think it gets intense because Paul is literally in the center of a tug-of-war between authorities, the media, his family, the team and the general population. This is where he’s tested against everything he believes in.

big fan_POSTER_finalThis movie shows how one person’s dedication cannot be destroyed no matter how bad a situation can be. I actually enjoyed this movie and can’t wait till it comes out in theaters. It’s a movie that I will most likely purchase to add to my collection.

Okay, so here’s some information on BIG FAN:

Run time             85 minutes, 35mm color

Rated R                 for language and some sexuality

Writer-Director:  Robert Siegel who once again demonstrates a unique and potent vision of the human experience.

BIG FAN will be coming to theatres in New York on August 28th and then expanding after.  You can find more cities and dates by checking out the BIG FAN Movie show times page.

You can also head over to the Official BIG FAN movie website and check out the trailer, read more about the characters and check out the press and photos and to all you fans out there; I really think you’re going to like this movie (if not, love it).
