Two Million Minutes- Review and Giveaway

If you’re a documentary buff (and even if you’re not); I recommend Two Million Minutes for you and your family. It is a film that documents the issues of global education and I can assure you; it’s a film worth watching. This is an important film for all parents and students to watch – to help motivate them to prepare themselves to compete against their global peers for jobs one day!
This film follows six students (two from the U.S., two from India and two from China). It compares how each student prioritizes their time. What the film also shows is that Indian and Chinese students are often 2-3 years ahead of U.S. students academically and that they dedicate themselves to their studies much more rigidly than that of American students. It paints a picture of how this will and could affect the global economy for the 21st century.
I urge you to consider watching this film, and even more so, consider watching this with your children (especially those in Jr. High and High school).
Knowing the importance of this film and what could be learned from it; my husband and I asked my son to come in and join us, we made it a rule that there were to be no phone calls, no texting and absolutely no leaving the room during the film. We even had the remote readily available in case we needed to rewind or pause the film in order to answer questions my son may have. Surprisingly, he was more than willing to abide. I think it might have had something to do with the fact that he is very intrigued by documentaries.
I’ll have to say; there were a few times during the film that I dropped my jaw. I was just amazed at what I read, saw and heard. I “almost” felt foolish because I had no clue…let me show you what I mean; here’s a passage from 2MMinutes.com (& the film)
“Statistics for American high school students give rise to concern for our student’s education in math and science. Less than 40 percent of U.S. students take a science course more rigorous than general biology, and a mere 18 percent take advanced classes in physics, chemistry or biology. Only 45 percent of U.S. students take math coursework beyond two years of algebra and one year of geometry. And 50 percent of all college freshmen require remedial coursework.” 2MMinutes/about page
Now, this is just a little of what I found out when watching this film. I’m telling you, it will definitely open your eyes to the educational system. You’ll gain a deeper insight on students; their priority, dedication and goal differences/similarities. It’s one of the most powerful documentaries I have ever seen. If you’re a teacher or know someone who is, I’d recommend watching this film or forwarding the information to someone in this field. It needs to be viewed and shared with others.

I looked around the 2MMinutes site, and I was most interested in the blog. I like the way that it highlights the most shocking and surprising news stories about education. I also enjoyed the Kansas math exam from 1985!
