Congrats to # 5- Anita
If you haven’t heard, PBS Kids has a new website (and a series to follow) called SciGirls…
This new series is changing the way girls think about science, technology, engineering and math (acronym: “S.T.E.M.”). In each half-hour episode girls (and boys) can follow a group of middle school girls who have the passion to find answers to their questions and eagerness to understand their world. This show showcases bright, curious real middle school-aged girls putting science and engineering to work.
Aside from watching (and enjoying) the first two shows with my girls (yes, there are great perks to blogging); I really enjoyed how much learning they pack into each show. My eldest daughter, just eight, told me that she really liked what the girls on the show were doing and even wanted to get started on her own “science projects” – awe- gotta love-em!
Would you like to know more?
The awesome SciGirls website is now live and in full swing! Check it out at http://pbskids.org/scigirls. There are a whole host of science-based projects to inspire girls – and they are encouraged to upload info about their own at-home projects and experiments too. There’s a weather widget that lets girls see the current weather and forecast according to their specific zip code; a “Moonscapes” feature that tells them which phase the moon is in based on a feed from NASA (one of several major science-related government orgs that help inform the website on a regular basis), a totally safe social networking component, where girls can “friend” other girls with similar interests, as well as a feature in which girls can create their own avatar and choose its skin/eye/hair color, etc., etc. And that’s just for starters! Very cool stuff indeed.
The SciGirls creative team is headed by tpt Executive Producer Richard Hudson, creator of the long-running PBS children’s science series Newton’s Apple and DragonflyTV. Series Producer is Kathy Shugrue co-creator of Fetch! and producer of Zoom at WGBH. The Izzie animation is created by Soup2Nuts, producers of WordGirl. The website is being developed by Big Bad Tomato Interactive. tpt National Productions’ quality, creativity and innovation have earned both popular and critical acclaim, garnering more than 300 awards for artistic and technical achievement, including 25 national and regional Emmy Awards, the duPont-Columbia Commendation, three Peabody Awards, an Academy Award nomination and awards at major international film festivals. tpt National Productions’ websites also have been honored with Parents’ Choice and PBS Web awards, and its outreach resources have been lauded and utilized by educators, community leaders and parents nationwide.
SciGirls is generously funded by The National Science Foundation with additional support from ExxonMobil.

I can go on for hours about how much we enjoyed the episodes and the website. I really think that PBS did great when creating this series. Just as with Newton’s Apple (remember that?) and Dragonfly TV; it will, in my opinion, help girls get excited about what they can do to contribute to the world of science and technology, math and engineering. It will help promote self confidence, promote self esteem and even more so- it will help to better their skills in other aspects of their growing lives. It’s truly a great show and my girls stand behind me 100% when I say, “totally recommended”.
Since the girls viewed the episodes we were provided, they have not stopped talking about it. They’ve told their friends, teachers, me and others about how cool these shows were and how all of them need to see it too. They’ve worn their “SciGirl” badge proudly and use their pencils with pride!!! They are excited about this show and it makes me happy to see it.
Now…how would you like to win a bag for your little SciGirl?

I love the idea of this show! Girls need to be focused on science and math, not hair and shoes all the time
I loved all the science projects on the site–there were some great ideas on there.
