Five fun Road Trip Game Activities for Kids

The TwitterMom community always has such fun campaigns going on, as well as discussion opportunities that we can share with others…kind of like “ideas for writing” to me. Today is one of them. TwitterMom asked to share Five fun family vacation activities our kids will enjoy. Well, here’s mine. (PS- you can also see more stories on what other moms will be doing by going to: www.travel.twittermoms.com).
My kids are fixing to embark on the end of another school year. They’ve got a lot of plans for our family; one being a weekly visit to Grandma’s house. It’s only a three hour drive, but Grandma’s house always seems to be more entertaining than our own. Maybe it’s because mom and dad are always working (?). This year’s going to be different though because I plan on “planning” a great trip for the kids and I to enjoy.
This summer, we’re not only going to Grandma’s house for a visit. If our finances work with us; I also plan on taking them to a few other places too. Places that will surely be the highlight of their summer vacation.
Here’s a wish list for what I plan on doing when we visit San Antonio this summer:
- The Alamo- granted, we’ve seen it a hundred times, or more; it’s just a great place to go and refresh their memory on why its there. There always has to be some sort of “educational” experience in every vacation, don’t you think?

- The River Walk- again, educational but also exercise, shopping and eating. The River Walk is filled with stores and nice restaurants to eat at (and a Starbucks)
To walk from one side of the River walk to the other (and then back again) can take you all day. That means…kids will sleep soundly that evening and well into the next morning. Plus, it’s great fun!!! The atmosphere is amazing. - The San Antonio Zoo- been there, done that a hundred times or more but it’s fun every time. The best part about the zoo for me are the monkeys. More importantly; kids love zoos…no matter what age they are.
- San Antonio Botanical Garden- There are over 33 acres of local vegetation. They also hold annual sales of their plants, hold special evening concerts and more. It’s just a great place to watch birds and enjoy the beautiful green earth…
- Buckhorn Saloon (AKA: Hall of Horns)- This place has been in operation since 1884 and is definitely a “must see/must visit” location. The saloon is filled with memorabilia of Ad Toepperwein and his wife Plinky. If you don’t know about these two; they were both expert marksmen who traveled for Winchester. They performed many marksmanship exhibitions over the years but one is remembered most. In 1906 Ad shot 72,500 2 3/4-inch square wood blocks (over the course of a ten day period)…only missing 9. You can see and read more about these two amazing people in history- but only if you visit the Buckhorn Saloon will you actually feel like you were there. It’s amazing!!!
So, these are my plans for the next trip to San Antonio we make. I can’t wait to do it because I know that the kids are going to have a blast. What are your plans for the kids? Are you going anywhere this summer? The biggest question: Do you plan on what you’ll do before you ever get there or are you a “fly by the seat of your pants” person and just do what ever, when ever?
