From the second I opened this book, it had me hooked.
The Lies We Told, by Diane Chamberlain, is a compelling story about two sisters (Maya and Rebecca Ward) who have two things in common. They both have medical degrees and share the horrific and brutal murder of their parents.
Each sister copes with the tragedy differently. Rebecca, the adventurous risk taker, flies off to disaster sites with Doctors International Disaster Aid (DIDA). She helps and tends to the suffering in areas stricken by natural catastrophes. Maya on the other hand is very timid and content at being a pediatric orthopedist with a very quite practice.
Within the first two pages of this book, you’ll read the horrific story of how Maya and Rebecca’s lives were shattered. You’ll read the vivid recollections of how two parents were brutally murdered in front of their children. As I was reading, I could feel the pain. I’ve never dealt with loss very well and just reading it made me grieve. It was as if I was there, in the back seat, watching the whole thing happen right before my eyes. I felt the rush as their mother ran to the car screaming. I could feel the pain as I heard the gun shots being fired. It was intense.
This story continued to move me. I couldn’t stand putting it book down for a second. I didn’t want to miss anything. It was such an intense story that it literally kept me at the edge of my seat. It is a gripping story that is not to be missed.

Synopsis:
Maya and Rebecca Ward are both accomplished physicians, but that’s where the sisters’ similarities end. As teenagers, they witnessed their parents’ murder, but it was Rebecca who saved Maya from becoming another of the gunman’s victims. The tragedy left Maya cautious and timid, settling for a sedate medical practice with her husband, Adam, while Rebecca became the risk taker.
After a devastating hurricane hits the coast of North Carolina, Rebecca and Adam urge Maya to join them in the relief effort. To please her husband, Maya finally agrees. She loses herself in the care and transport of victims, but when her helicopter crashes into raging floodwaters, there appears to be no survivors.
Forced to accept that Maya is gone, Rebecca and Adam turn to one another first for comfort, then in passion, unaware that, miles from civilization, Maya is injured and trapped with strangers she’s not certain she can trust. Away from the sister who has always been there to save her, now Maya must find the courage to save herself-unaware that the life she knew has changed forever.

I don’t think that I do very well dealing with complicated situations in my life. Turning to family helps – UNLESS they are the problem. I pray, I try to lose myself in a new fiction novel
, I try to not get too depressed by telling myself it will all be OK. Sometimes it works …… sometimes it doesn’t
