Wearing Glasses

In my family; I’m the only one who needs to wear eyeglasses. I’ve had vision problems ever since I was seven. It’s probably longer than that, but I was about seven years old when I pierced a freshly sharpened pencil through the whites of my eye. I promise you- this was a complete accident. I was erasing a mark I made on paper, during school, and basically slammed my eye straight into the lead- it could have happened to anyone.

Anyways…after the mishap, my mother realized I had a problem seeing things in front of me. I can’t blame her for not noticing sooner. I never was one to complain about these sorts of things. Besides, she had a lot going on back then too…work, taking care of the house and home, my sisters, my grandmother, my father…and the fact that I was constantly going through some sort of medical procedure for my lip (for those new to Blogfully, I was born with cleft lip).

When I finally did see an eye doctor (after my eye healed), we were told that I needed prescription glasses. At the time; I wasn’t too thrilled about adding something new to my overall appearance. I had already gone through a dozen surgeries and wasn’t looking forward to giving kids yet another reason to notice me. Back then; wearing glasses were grounds for being bullied and picked on. I just didn’t want to go through the extra grief. Honestly, If given the choice, I would have rather gone through life half blind then to deal with the torture I was about to endure from classmates (kids can be so mean).

glassesOkay- remember when glasses only came in a few shades of colors; when you couldn’t hide the thickness of your lens within the frames and how everyone who wore them kind of looked, and felt, the same? Yeah…that’s what they had me wearing and I hated them so much. I mean I really, really hated them.

Surprisingly, glasses have now become an accessory of choice. People are buying glasses- even if they don’t need to wear them. What’s more amusing is that the ‘old’ styles have come back with a vengeance (particularly; the cat eye and rectangular frames). I can’t say I blame people for loving them. I’ve grown fond of these styles myself and actually enjoy seeing them worn on others. I think it adds a little character to anyone who wears them. I should know, I own two pair.

It is amazing how times have changed. When I was a kid I couldn’t stand them…and now, they’re no longer just for seeing better. They are used to enhance and even change your appearance and are use as an accessory rather than just a necessity. I love that glasses are so widely accepted now and that it’s so much easier to shop for that perfect pair.

And speaking of shopping….It has never been easier to do. Thanks to the “World Wide Web” and the latest internet technology you don’t even have to leave your home to try-and-buy glasses online. If you don’t know how, it’s simple. When on the site; upload a picture of yourself (facing forward), virtually try on any pair that suits your fancy, enter your prescription information (given by your doctor) and then buy them. Now remember, you may not find the ‘unlimited’ varieties that you’d normally find in-store, but if convenience is what you’re after- you just might find that shopping for glasses online is something you like and/or prefer to do.

Ugh, reading about your accident sent shivers down my spine! I can’t stand even thinking about an eye injury. I wear glasses at night only because even with the featherweight lenses mine are thick and heavy and I hate them! I wear contacts during the day, but I must admit there are some cool styles of glasses available for people who are less blind than me!

Yeah, I remember that day as if it was yesterday- OUCH! It hurt a lot…my mother, poor thing, had no clue I was that blind (LOL).
I have to wear pretty thick glasses as well. My son has put mine on (and showed his friend) to prove just how blind he says I am. I’m glad they don’t have to wear them. They’ve got their “perfect vision” from their daddy!!!

@barb: Lucky kids! My daughter is doomed–I can’t think of ONE person on EITHER SIDE of her immediate family that does not wear contacts or glasses. Seriously, it’s just a matter of time before we’re shopping for her glasses, I’m sure!
