Get Wild with National Park and Recreation Month

by barb on July 2, 2012

July is National Park and Recreation Month. Are you planning to “Get Wild” Outside?

Pledge to GET WILD in your local park and rec areas this July! Get some activity, connect with nature, family, and friends, or discover new ways to have fun right in your community! Heading out to any official park, recreation area/facility, hiking or biking trail, playground, swimming pool, or natural area counts!

Get WildI took the pledge and can’t wait to head to San Antonio for some of their summer events. There’s still plenty of time for us to join in the fun and besides that, “getting wild” gives me another “excuse” to see my mother and the rest of the family.

The theme for this years National Park and Recreation Month long event is “Get Wild.” This helps to encourage families to play outside and enjoy the benefits that local parks have to offer – like programs that inspire healthy, active lifestyles along with activities geared towards helping kids learn to appreciate nature and the environment in their local communities.

My goal this summer (for both girls and I) has been to get outdoors more often – to exercise, have some fun, get some sun…

Joining some of our National Park and recreation events would be just the thing to do. In fact, I’m currently planning our next trip to San Antonio – specifically to attend the Get Down and Dirty event with the whole family (for $10) | listen to this, it sounds like so much fun:

Wild Wednesdays, Extraordinary Experiences in Nature! – Get down and dirty
Friedrich Wilderness Park, 21395 Milsa. What is our soil all about? Come play in the dirt, make a clay ribbon, be a sand detective, entertain a soil creature and take home a sedimentation tube. For ages 7 to 11. Cost: $5 per person or $10 per family. Call ###-#### for reservations.

Had I not learned about July being National Park and Recreation month, I would have never known about this event (or others). That said, I hope that you find some really great happenings in your area. There’s definitely a lot going on this month. See for yourself: Download the official toolkit to see the happenings around your area.
