Getting your period, yeah…not the world’s easiest conversation to have with your daughters…especially when you still look at them as babies. But when you consider the facts – girls are starting their periods as early as 8 years old – it’s a conversation that should be discussed and not thrown to the curb, hoping the conversation never pops up. Besides, I would hate for one of my girls to start their period and not know anything about what’s going on with them.
I can’t tell you enough, how much I’ve enjoyed being a part of the Kotex Mom group; doing this has allowed me to learn so much about my girls (that I didn’t already know) and how to better connect with them, on their level, when it comes to being girls and going through changes.
Before this campaign, I hadn’t really discussed getting your period with the girls (mainly because I didn’t think they were ready yet), but after being a part of this group, visiting the Kotex site for Tweens, and reading about the fear that some of these girls have about facing their first period, I’m glad I was a part of it all. It’s helped me see things in the eyes of my girls. It’s also helped me understand their worries, their fears, and how to help them understand all these changes. I was one of those girls that knew nothing about periods before it happened to me, and I wasn’t about to let my girls face this experience alone.
The Kotex site for Tweens – it’s not only a site for moms. It’s a site for tweens to learn the facts about periods. It’s a forum for tweens to ask all those questions they’re afraid to ask. It’s a site to read other tweens stories and above all – it’s a site where tweens can feel safe about learning, asking and reading about all things “period.”
Almost forgot to tell you how I break the ice every time the conversation of “getting your period” comes up…
We do our nails!
Have you had the conversation with your daughter(s) yet? If so, how’d you break the ice?
