And the Problem returns – Damn UTIs

PiperPiper has chronic UTIs. She’s had this issue since before she could walk; just recently though, these infections have become a real nuisance.

Most recently – December 24th – she was diagnosed with a pretty bad UTI. She was put on strong antibiotics for 10 days. And then – just 3 days after she finished taking her last dose – she drops down in pain again (yesterday). I have a prescription for peridium (takes the pain away within 10 minutes, in even the worst cases) so I gave her a dose to calm the pain until this morning.

We went straight to the doctors this morning to learn that it was back and even stronger than last time. The doctor was amazed to see her history (more than a dozen UTIs a year) and said we needed to do something before the situation got any worse, so we made a game plan.

She had a culture done today (for sensitivities) – we’ll know what’s going on within 24 hours. In 10 days we go back to the doctor so that they could put her on some sort of daily medicine and they’re also sending us out to a specialist to see if there are any treatment options for her at this time.

For now, all we can do is keep her comfortable and free of pain.

Do you know someone with chronic UTIs? Do you (or they) have any advice to share? If so I’d really-really appreciate it. I just hate seeing my baby go through this much pain.

  • My little sister has chronic UTIs. She cannot even think about drinking a soda because that is what triggers hers. If she does treat herself to a caffeinated (or maybe it’s the carbonation) drink, then she has to drink three times as much water and/or cranberry juice to counteract it.

    • Wow…that’s what they’re doing right now – the doctors sent us to the lab to culture her for sensitivities…I’m supposed to get word from the doctor sometime today with results.

I hope we can figure out what to stay away from for her sake. I just hate seeing her in so much pain because we don’t know what triggers it. :(

Thanks for sharing. I’ll have to read your comment to Piper so she doesn’t continue to think she’s the only one on earth who has this problem. :)

I will keep her in my prayers. Hope you can get it solved. UTI’s are not fun!

    • Thanks Tammy, I appreciate that so much! We’ll keep you informed with any updates. :)

No UTIs here, but I hope she finds a painfree solution soon! Good luck!

    • I’m so glad you haven’t had to experience the pains of a UTI…they bite! And I’m right there with you – hoping they find some sort of pain-free treatment option soon.

Hope you’re doing great Renee :)
